Chapter nineteen

Selene couldn’t believe she’d walked out of that room and left him to his own devices. If he was planning to bolt, she’d given him the perfect opportunity. She’d had to get out of there, though. How could she have slept with him? They were working together. She didn’t mix business with pleasure.

Flashes of his luscious lips and incredible body reminded her of exactly why she’d had sex with him. He was one of the most attractive men she’d ever met, and that was saying something considering how long she’d been alive. It was enough for her to wish, however quietly, that he didn’t embody everything she’d fought her whole life against. Her getting involved with a thief was ridiculous.

Though she did have to admit, reluctantly, that he wasn’t quite as awful of a human being as she’d imagined. Yes, he stole art and antiquities and sold them to the highest bidder, but that wasn’t everything he was. During the fight the day before he’d been a real asset. He’d come to Ambrose’s rescue when she’d been unable to stop Nyx herself. And, she recalled, she’d hopped right into the ambulance with Ambrose and left Wolfe on his own. If he was going to take off, he could have done it then.

But he hadn’t.

Instead, he showed up at the hospital and waited with her, even when he’d thought she and Ambrose were a couple. When he had no reason to care about Ambrose and every reason to dislike him or distrust him. She could try to argue with herself that he was there for the belt, and there still could be some of that floating around in his head, but it didn’t feel like that was his primary reason anymore. She didn’t know what to make of it.

Selene glanced up, noticing that she’d arrived at the hospital without even realizing it. She headed inside and checked in at the front desk. Thankfully, she was sent right up to Ambrose’s room.

She braced herself. Gutshot wounds were never pretty or quick to recover from. Ambrose had been in a lot of dangerous situations with her in the past, but it still got to her every time he was injured. Call it dormant maternal instinct or call it empathy, but every time he was injured, she wished she could somehow pass her healing gene to him so he would recover faster.

With a sharp inhale she pushed the door open and walked into the room.

“Took you long enough.” The mildly annoyed British lilt was much weaker than Ambrose’s usual voice, but it still sounded wonderful to her ears.

“Ungrateful little shit.” She smiled at him and watched his lips twitch as he fought a losing battle against his own smile. She crossed the room and stood next to his bed. She wanted to touch him, connect with him in some way, but didn’t want to make anything worse.

“But you love me anyway.” He reached out slowly, and she grabbed his hand, squeezing gently.

“You know I do.
